Material Mechanical Property Testing & Analysis

Kratos SRE provides a comprehensive range of material mechanical property testing and analysis that supports industrial, aerospace, and military clients. Our experienced engineering team has proven expertise in materials behavior, analysis, and evaluation and is supported by a contingent of highly skilled experimentalist technicians. Moreover, Kratos has a well-established testing and measurements capability and is widely recognized as the leading laboratory in the country for high-temperature evaluation of advanced materials.

Our engineering team has a longstanding history of working closely with clients in the design and execution of projects that meet their specific needs. In addition, we are adept at managing a range of project types from the most complex and challenging to quick-turn analyses.

Testing Parameters, Facilities, and Instrumentation

  • Kratos offers clients the ability to measure material behaviors in a range of temperatures from cryogenic to more than 5500° Materials evaluated include, but are not limited to: resin, metal and ceramic matrix composites, metals, graphites, carbon/carbons, and monolithic ceramics.
  • Material properties are typically determined by techniques more rigorous than requirements imposed by ASTM methods. If standard methodology is not established, skilled Kratos engineers will develop unique tests tailored to the material or application.
  • The mechanical testing laboratory contains more than 40 major, fully-instrumented test stands, many having been developed by and unique to Kratos. The testing machines are either mechanically or servo-hydraulically driven, and calibration is maintained with ASTM E4-89 load verification requirements. Instrumentation includes: strain gages, extensometers, optical strain analyzer, modal acoustic emission sensors, and strain field visualization by DIC. Sample capabilities range from small filament specimens to structural components with dimensions greater than 6 feet.

Specialized Mechanical Property Tests

Specialized mechanical property tests available at Kratos include:

  • Test methods for lifetime studies of materials in high-temperature air environments
  • Materials testing for space structures
  • Strain visualization and shape deformation
  • Large structures characterization
  • Complex multi-axis loads and unique designs
  • Finite element analysis
