Voices From Space
Podcast Episode 13: Mar 5, 2018
Doug Loverro, Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy
Doug Loverro most recently served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy for the Department of Defense. In his role as Deputy Assistant Secretary, he was responsible for establishing policy and guidance to assure US and allied warfighters the benefits of Space capabilities and helped guide the Department’s strategy for addressing space-related issues. Doug also led Departmental activities in international space cooperation.
Hear Doug share his thoughts on current space policy and the clear need for international agreements and regulation to turn space into an economic reality. Doug discusses space situational awareness and the essential requirement to know where things are and where they are going in order to avoid space collisions that would be catastrophic. He makes an analogy to unregulated city traffic in the 1900s where the lack of traffic rules clearly enabled chaos and collisions. Space is a vast wilderness with plenty of economic potential, however many companies will not exercise their economic destiny until rules and a clear infrastructure, like traffic signals, are put into place.
